October 14 we were fortunate enough to be able to sponsor an amazing event, the 2011 We Day Vancouver. 18,000 youth, educators and supporters filled Rogers Arena for a day of inspiring speeches by guests like Mikhail Gorbachev and former Congolese child soldier Michel Chikwanine with entertainment by Hedley, Shawn Desman and more.

We were also fortunate enough to run into speaker Spencer West in the arena. Next year this incredible man is planning to climb Mount Kilimanjaro in his wheelchair.

Whistler Water was there to support the important work of Free the Children and educate thousands of students about the importance of recycling through our Let the Bottle Live On pledge.

The heat has finally arrived on the west coast, and it has us here at Whistler Water thinking about all things Summer. Particularly, Live at Squamish. I know there’s a whole summer between now and the weekend of August 20th and 21st, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t get excited and secure your tickets ahead of time! 2010 was a blast, and this year is already promising to be even bigger and better with headlining bands like Weezer and Metric. I’m really looking forward to hearing Shane Koyczan’s performance as well as all of the others! Check more bands playing Live at Squamish here.

Whistler Water is a proud sponsor and we want to send you to Live at Squamish! Our friends at Donald’s Market are going to be giving away a pair of tickets at each of their three locations around Vancouver between June 13th and July 4th. All you have to do is buy some Whistler Water, write your name and number on the back of the receipt and place it in the designated drop box. Find out where a Donald’s Market is near you.

Can you picture what $1,913,010 worth of donated canned food looks like? Let Canstruction Vancouver show you. For just under a decade, their anti-hunger initiative has been building donations by building artwork. The formula is simple: Create sculptures from canned food, generate public interest in the artwork, in turn, promoting awareness for what it’s all really for: Those in need. The formula works.

Last night, through our partnership with the Greater Food Bank Society, we were able to see the latest contributions for 2011 by volunteering as a “DeCanstruction” crew at Canstruction Vancouver:

    Event Facts

    • Average food value per sculpture – $13,013
    • Estimated cans of protein (tuna, ham, etc.) - 669,535

    • Number of sculptures built – 147

The Greater Vancouver Food Bank Society

The Greater Vancouver Food Bank Society (GVFBS) does not accept any government funding, so donations raised from these events are important in our efforts to provide food and related assistance to those in need in our communities. Each week, up to twenty-five thousand recipients are aided through our programs in the Vancouver, Burnaby, New Westminster and North Shore communities; as many as ten thousand of those assisted are children. The GVFBS purchases such large quantities of fresh fruit, vegetables and eggs that we are able to translate every one dollar donation into three dollars worth of food with our strong buying power and wonderful partnerships with local farmers.

Last week Whistler Water put a bounty on the head of Grouse Grind record holder Sebastian Salas, saying that if anyone could beat him at the BMO 20th Annual Grouse Grind Mountain Run, Whistler Water would match the funds raised for the event (benefitting Grind for Kids, raising funds for BC Children’s Hospital Foundation). Well, as it turns out, Sebastian beat his own time! What to do? Well, Whistler Water President Stuart McLaughlin announced at the awards ceremony that despite this turn of events, Whistler Water would match the funds raised (in the ballpark of $10,000, the tally is still being determined as funds come in) to make the final donation of the event $20,000.

Twenty-three year-old Sebastian Salas set a new course record of 25 minutes and one second at the 20th BMO Grouse Grind Mountain Run today. Just last month he smashed the unofficial time (set outside the annual race) with a stunning climb that took him only 23 minutes and 48 seconds. The race this morning drew over 500 participants, and raised funds for Grind For Kids a local annual initiative that supports BC Children’s Hospital. Whistler Water matched the event day fundraising to bring the total charitable contribution from the historic 20th race to $20k.

race-winner-sebastian-selasWhistler Water was on hand at the 19th Annual BMO Grouse Grind Mountain Run at Grouse Mountain yesterday where West Vancouver local, Sebastian Salas, smashed the existing record with a time of 25:24. The official course record previously held by Michael Simpson was 26:19 set in 2007.

Winning the 19th Annual BMO Grouse Grind Mountain Run in record fashion marks Selas’ second consecutive win in successive years, with the champion besting his winning time from last year by more than two minutes.

We like to think it’s because of the Whistler Water…

Whistler Water is the water of choice for the outdoor concert experience of the summer.

World famous entertainers and local guests will be refreshed with Canada’s Whistler Water at the upcoming premiere benefit concert in West Vancouver on Saturday, September 12, 2009.  The Sarah McLachlan Foundation and the District of West Vancouver will present a unique occasion called “Summer Sessions at Ambleside” as a one-day premiere benefit concert in the idyllic setting.

Whistler Water is a proud sponsor of the event, the first of its kind in West Vancouver, that will feature musical performances by megastar artists Sarah McLachlan, Sheryl Crow and Neil Young.

All proceeds from the concert go to the Sarah McLachlan Foundation. The Foundation’s mandate is to bring music into the lives of young Canadians, through providing free music programs to youth in under-served communities. The impact of participation is profound; building self-esteem, and fostering creativity in young people through the power of music. Ambleside Park in West Vancouver will also provide the perfect location for the late summer concert. Alongside the premiere artists, the all day festival will include performances from an eclectic array of talented Canadian artists.

As British Columbia’s truly local water, Whistler Water is a natural fit for this prominent local event, benefitting home grown music. Summer Sessions at Ambleside will benefit youth in Canadian communities, and provide the audience with a rare and excellent experience. Having Whistler Water there also serves to encourage people to have a healthy lifestyle and celebrate all things local.

**Update: Photos from the event are now posted to our Summer Sessions at Ambleside Flickr Set**
